Volume 1 is the very first graphic novel and comic book based on the animated show Mysticons.

Synopsis[]

Arkayna, Zarya, Emerald, and Piper--unexpected heroes who together become epic warriors as well as the closest of friends--are drawn together by a prophecy to battle evil and protect the realm!

Plot[]

In the streets of Drake City, an old woman has her purse stolen by two biker thieves. However, it is revealed to have been a dream seen by Zarya, who awakes in her hammock in the Stronghold of the second generation of Mysticons. Realizing that the sun is not even up yet, Zarya is about to go back to sleep, but is awakened by the overexcited elf Piper who comes to inform her that Malvaron had arrived and that he brought pancakes for breakfast.

Zarya comes in the room, where Malvaron is speaking to Emerald and Princess Arkayna. The mid-level Astromancer in-training and very powerful Solon wonders why he can't do something nice for his troop of cosmoverse-saving warriors once in awhile.

Quotes[]

  • Malvaron: "Can't a Solon do something nice for his troop of cosmoverse-saving warriors once in a while?"
  • Zarya: "They do smell good."
  • Malvaron: "Also I wanted to give you a little pick-me-up before I share the bad news."
  • Zarya: "There it is."
  • Emerald (mouth full of pancakes): "What do ya mean, 'bad news'?"
  • Malvaron: "That's the thing- We don't know. We don't think it's dark magic. Honestly, it might too low over the Mysticons' pay grade."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Throttle: "Eat my dragon dust, Baby Sister."
  • Clutch: "You're three minutes older than me, Brat!
  • Throttle: "Exactly. Respect your elders."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Zarya: "You're racing for gold. I can offer you something better- the Dragon Disk."
  • Kymraw: "Where you get that?"
  • Zarya: "Your twins aren't the only pickpockets in town."
  • Kymraw: "What you want it for?"
  • Zarya: "I want to race. By morning, the Mysticons are gonna discover their precious Disk is missing. We do this tonight."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Throttle: "Look, I know we don't know each other, but I have a feeling you'll understand. I have to do this. For my sister. Just try and keep up."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Zarya: "I'm sorry I ran off. I thought could handle it."
  • Princess Arkayna: "We just want to help. We're family, Zarya.
  • Zarya: "You were right. It was not a great plan.
  • Princess Arkayna: "You have had better ones."
  • Piper: "Awe. You guys."
  • Emerald: "Not to rush you guys, but they're getting away."
  • Princess Arkayna: "You're right. We got the Disk, which you and I will talk about later."
  • Zarya: "Yep. I'd expect so."
  • Princess Arkayna: "But they're still a threat to Drake City. What are you doing?"
  • Emerald: "Something we should have done ages ago."

Trivia[]

In the Comic Book[]

  • The cover shows the Mysticons appearing in the early twenties as opposed to their mid-teens.
  • Zarya mentions Arkayna being her sister, which means that this takes place somewhere between "The Dragon's Rage" and "Save the Date!"
  • Doug is mentioned by Piper.
  • Dreadbane and Necrafa are both mentioned by Arkayna. This means that this graphic novel takes place in the first half of the second season (Episodes 14-26)
  • This is the first time Malvaron cooks breakfast by making pancakes.
  • We meet two elves who, like Zarya and Arkayna, are fraternal twin sisters.
  • The Dragon Disk is used by Zarya to bribe the fraternal elfin twins, even though it is thoroughly drained of its ancient magic before the events of Season 2, in which this comic book takes place.
  • Due to being the beloved Princess of Planet Gemina, Arkayna dons a disguise to move undetected in the Undercity, as her wearing a royal crown would have made the people very nervous. This is something she did not do in "An Eye for an Eye."
  • Kymraw is wearing pale blue Twinkly Mare pajamas.
  • Arkayna berates her twin sister for stealing the Dragon Disk again, as reference to what she had done in the show's premiere.
  • The Stronghold has a magical laboratory behind a long shelf of spellbooks, in which the ancient, mighty Dragon Disk is kept. This did not appear in the show.
  • All four mystical bracers-Dragon, Wolf, Phoenix and Unicorn- are seen in the transformation sequence but are not used once. They had never appeared in the transformation sequence throughout the show.

Outside the Comic[]

  • Kymraw is the first villain to appear from the animated show.
  • Hover-bikes are another mode of techno-magic transportation vehicles in addition to mage boards. They never appeared in the animated show.
  • The Mysticons don more street versions of their top Mysticon uniforms to blend in more.
  • A secret hangout in the Undercity is revealed: Amaranth, a bar run by a human woman named Bess, which can only be accessed by chanting a certain spell that causes light green glowing runes on the wall. It was longtime hideout for Zarya Moonwolf during her younger years as a street rat.
  • According to Throttle, Kymraw looks much less serious and intimidating in her Twinkly Mare pajamas.
  • Another park is revealed, in addition to Centaur Park: Pegasus Park.
